Me and some of my friends are working on a experimental rc aircraft. If it's successful we'll continue experimenting with new designs.

Right now we have found almost everything online, batteries, servos, motor, etc. Balsa too.

Only thing remaining is the wing spar.

We need aluminum square cross section hollow tubes. Outer edge should be 1/2 inch (around 12.7 mm) or 12 mm, & wall thickness shouldn't be more than 1 inch. We need 4 of these, each 1 meter in length.

Also, we need another aluminum cross section tube, whose outer edge is around 16 mm to 18 mm and wall thickness is less 1.5 mm. We need 2 of these, each 1 meter in length.

If someone knows any website or seller that can provide us with these, please let me know.

P.S. We tried searching for carbon fiber square tubes, but similar dimensions weren't available. Plus carbon fibre is very expensive too Cry

Hi,

You can inquire about aluminium tube is PARRYs corner Chennai. But I doubt 12mm square tube with 1m lenght is difficult to get as most of it come in lots. As far as 25mm square tube, its readily available in leading hardware shop for 6ft.

Why cant you try round tubes? There are easy to get but 12mm I doubt.

May I know why you are specifically looking for 1m length? Cant it be 500mm or so and interconnect both?

May I know about your RC airplane model and what is your aim in doing that? Is is custom made or ready built plan kits kind? Is it fully balsa construction?

If SPAR is your concern and if your construction is of balsa wood, instead of Aluminium, you can try 6mm to 8mm wooden reaper. It would give you sufficient strength.

Hi Samayaraj,

Thanks for the reply. The reason I am looking for the mention thicknesses is weight. I did find 25 mm tubes but they're too heavy. Also my wing is supposed to be a split wing, so i plan to use the bigger tube as an interconnect with the smaller ones bolted in the middle of the entire spar using standard nuts and bolts.

Also you mentioned about the wooden reapers. Can you provide some link to a website that sells the same? Thanks! Bow

@aeroenthus7,
If you have not yet built the wing, you should consider hardwood spars.
Available at plywood stores in cross section 3mm x 12mm upwards, usually 6 feet long.
Ask for BATON, used for framing windows. Quite inexpensive.
Best wishes.

You can find different types of aluminium tubes at https://in.rsdelivers.com/productlist/search?query=aluminium%20tube

1/2 inch square tube https://in.rsdelivers.com/product/rs-pro/006174tn/6063-t6-square-aluminium-tube-1m-x-1-2in-16swg/3047894

Why cant you try 10mm round tube

https://in.rsdelivers.com/product/rs-pro/118224/6063-t6-round-aluminium-tube-1m-x-10mm-x-10mm-od/9186374

You can find various types of aluminium tubes at this side. Pl. look at it.

For hardwood reaper, you can find at any hardware shop/ carpenter shop.

My interconnect is basically a bigger tube in the middle and smaller ones going inside it, with 3 M8 holes drilled to hold the entire assembly in place. Drilling holes in square tubes is much easier as compared to round tubes.

May I know about your RC airplane model and what is your aim in doing that? Is is custom made or ready built plan kits kind? Is it fully balsa construction?

I found the 12.7mm (1/2 inch tubes), thanks a lot for that. No I just need one more tube with outer edge dimension between 16mm and 18mm. If you can help me figure out where to buy this remaining dimension from, it would be great. Thanks!
