is this the type of cnc machine required for cutting foam etc,i.e. has use in this field
or if not pleasde delete this thread

That CNC is used for precision engineering work on metals. Might be useful if you plan to make your own 'brand' of RC engines.

Definitely too much for foam..

I just won a 1 Watt Laser diode on E-bay ($26) and waiting it to be shipped. I am plannign to invest more on the CNC drive only when I have found a good cutting device.

With most of plan from Depron/Balsa Laser seems be the only option. Hot wire CNC for Foams are pretty much useless for Depron (Horizontal and Vertical arrangements) on a moving head CNC (simpler design)
I had also thought for 'Cutting Bit' , similar to drill bit which have tread to cut than drill. They are also pretty useless for moving head cutters.

If I fail with Diode (which is likely), I might plan with Wire/cutting bit with the head stationary and platform holding the foam/balsa moving.

Would crate a build log for the CNC once I get the diode.

all the best. just be careful with the lasers as it may leave you blind!!
1. Never look into them (may be an IR laser already emitting enough power)
2. keep shiny/metallic  objects around which may accidentally reflect the rays.
