I just got a small sample of this stuff. It is awesome! It is lighter than the Depron that I have been using and much denser. Has anybody had any experience building with it? I am surprised that this is available in India and we have no knowledge about it. Or do we???

VC the blue foam that they are showcasing in their website is indeed very light
it can be sanded with ease and can be given desired shapes, it is mostly used by scale aeromodelers to shape out the nose or tail sections of scaled planes.
A good material, solid and strong. there is something very similar to this sold by shops selling fishing accessories, its orange in color and is usually used as floats and buoys.
I suppose this find of your will surely make many aeromodelers happy!

cant promise regarding this but i will try my level best.......the sheets which i saw were near about 20 to 30 mm thick.
6x4 ft.........because we remember last year we use lie on them  sleep jump   sevred as beds when we used to bunk classes and work in the auditorium

That is the real blue foam from DOW (the same firm which was responsible for Bhopal).
But I was wondering whether the firms at Delhi and Hyderabad would sell in small quantities to modellers like us?

I am sure they will have retailers / distributors somewhere. Those are the guys we need to track down. Good news is that it is available in India. Now how do we get our hands on it.

Trust me Guys, this stuff is magic. It is midway between Depron and EPP. Stronger, lighter and denser than Depron but not as durable as EPP.

 When heated and even when sanded vigorously these materials will give off toxic and noxious fumes. As such always wear a fume-mask or work somewhere very well ventilated. Breathing in the powder after sanding is also a hazard. ...BEWARE>>>>> 

Compared to the kind of toxic and noxious fumes that I breathe all day (4 packs = 40 a day), these fumes will be like a breath freshener!

  @ VC, I was like you once, when i was Saudi used to smoke 40 to 60 Cigrattes a day, but I quit when I found love,  love for my hobby...
I did not know that it gives out fumes, well, as I said before this material is very good when it comes to sanding and getting proper shapes!

There is a kit maker in the US who sells extremely cheap but very good quality kits made out of blue and pink foam - steelheadproducts.com. I have a couple of their kits. Yes the foam is kind of tough but also brittle and gets impressions easily. Breaks up pretty easily too. Stiff and does not need much reinforcement though. Won't compare with EPP or elapor

after seeing the address, i think we can get that foam some wat cheaper and if my guess is not wrong we will get so many another shop in same place.... troop bazzar pe sab kuch miltahey sasta......

and forget to mention DOW does not sale in retail. They sale only to their distributors who in a way undertake project work (cold insulation and sound proofing). Not much scope of getting it in retail unless you have friends at distributors or pick up some big qty.

I saw a few guys carrying thick blocks of similar looking foam on a TVS the other day It was blue in color but not sure it was the same .
One link says it is for insulation  so my best guess will be companies involved in insulation

I have a Philipino friend who is the lead technician at one of the hobby stores in Qatar.  He builds most of his models out of this foam.  And he gets them by "dumpster diving" near construction sites (still asks for permission of the personnel there).

Available : 24mm thickness sheets 122 mm X 61 mm (4 feet X 2 feet)
Price per carton of 16 sheets (they are not authorised to sell loose) = Rs.3240/-

We ideally need 6mm sheets. Thus from each sheet, we can produce (using hot wire) 4 sheets approximately. Taking wastage into account, let's say, we manage 3 sheets from each 24mm piece. Thus, we are talking about 48 - 64 sheets (take an avg of 50 sheets) of wonderful blue styrofoam for Rs.3240/- (price per sheet will work out to Rs. 65/- approx)

The people staying close to Hyderabad are lucky, as they can save on transportation. In my case, air freight is working out to Rs.1100/- or so giving me a cost of Rs.85/- per sheet if I can produce 50 pcs of 6mm from the pack of 16 pcs of 24mm.

Hi Guys,
This stuff is used in insulation here and is perfect for cutting wing cores out of it.
Good for sanding and shaping, cuts easily with hotwire cutter. Denser version of thermocol which can be sanded easily. It is available at large builders merchants as 50mm or 100mm thick 2.5mt x 1.50mt sheets.
I use it for repairing foam wings. This cannot beat EPP though.
EPP is much more forgiving in hard landings. If you want to build something out of this, you will have to use reinforcing tape from HK and have a carbon/ bamboo spar. This is very rigid.

You will be waisting time and money trying to build from 6mm blue foam. Forget it.
This is used as a 24mm thick to cut wing cores.

Blue foam i will only consider it good for making patterns for fiberglass cowl, wheel pants. Blue foam due to its fine grain quality is great for making patterns. 

i have seen those blue styrofoam in my school days    
i even used it for a a small project in my school.  
i got  it of a retailer near me about 10 yrs back
sadly now no stationery stores stocks those things here
infact 5yrs down the line we were told by the school not to use them as well as thermocol  
since they are not biodegradable
  i think the sheet was about 3*2 feet long i got it for about  :Rs:50

Not blue but same product is available at Kolkata which is light green colour. Like blue foam it is also weight 32kg cubic meter as per the company guy. I have even collected one piece sample block to see how it works with hotwire and laser cutter.

My 2c if I may; I have seen 2 varieties of extruded poly styrene in Kolkata. One is light green and one is light blue. The light green is made by Supreme Petro chemicals in India and the blue one is Dow.  Of what I have seen the green one is harder or stiffer compared to the blue one which may make it more brittle. The blue one its slightly softer and more flexible than the green one. None is sold loose. I prefer the green variety.

Since you are in Mumbai, the best way to source styrofoam is to search for Distributors/dealers of either Dow Chemicals or Supreme Petrochem, I source my styrofoam in Kolkata from Supreme Petrochem and since the company is based in Mumbai, you will definitely be able to source it there.

I saw videos where styrofoam are used in race course in alien countries to prevent shock in case of an accident.
If anybdy lives near Noida,he may go there(race course and investigate bout em.

I found it in kolkata. Not DOW but the one manufactured by supreme petrochem. Also I did build a cessna out of it, search for the thread.
