Title: To use heat shrinks or not?
Post by: Fw190 on December 16, 2012, 08:48:48 PM
Hi everyone! a quick question I wanted to ask-
Is it advantageous to use heat shrink to cover soldered wires or better to just tape em up ?
and how do I shrink them- eg heat them over a candle?

I am rather inclined to try out heat shrinks but haven't used them before.Any words of insight/advice guys?

Well i use normal steelgrip tape.no problem yet.but dont tape them completely and tightly.and u can use the solder itself to wrap the shrink.

The steel grip works fine, except that it is hard to use where the wires bends, it sorts of slips away if you use too little.

heat shrinks are best wen used for joining wires and yeah u have to heat it over a candy  for the tube to shrink otherwise use a hot air gun.But always remeber to pass it over the fame while using candle otherwise the shrink tube will melt

heat shrink, when i started building my quad i was wondering why do you need heat shrink when you have tape doh.. but then dust sometimes loosen up the tapes (danger) and some other things. So i suggest and recommend to always go with heat shrinks..

+1 to satyagupta.. even i would recommend to go for heat shrinks on joints

@ sameermaha refer:

these are much cheaper tahn the HK ones.. however i havent tried any from them

heatshrinks are useful and can be purchased locally (for NCR guys, lajpat rai).
Steelgrips insulation tapes are good for big joints (because the glue needs more surface are to hold tightly). That is why they are successful with electrical joints as opposed to electronic joints.

As a kid, I'd wrap food grade cling film, stick a bit of cellotape on it and use mom's hair dryer to work the magic. They are not durable like heatshrinks but are better than insulation tapes which tend to come off with time. An alternative approach is to use insulation from thick electric wire, strip off the insulation, slide the insulation on your wire, solder and slide back to cover the joint.
