Title: Which connector is better
Post by: Akshayb on February 12, 2011, 07:20:10 AM
Fellow RCer What do you think is the best connector for your RC electric system., I was just wondering which connector to use.

1. XT-60
(http://i982.photobucket.com/albums/ae303/akshayhmtian/RC%20Connectors/xt-60.jpg)

2.Dean's
(http://i982.photobucket.com/albums/ae303/akshayhmtian/RC%20Connectors/deans.jpg)

3.EC-3
(http://i982.photobucket.com/albums/ae303/akshayhmtian/RC%20Connectors/ec3.png)

Or any thing else, EC-3 is better option in my opinion.

Somehow I feel XT-60 is the best

Yup XT60, as most of us use batts form Hobby city and all their batts come with xt60, would be ideal to go ahead with it.

Hi Akshay sir, I would too vote for XT60. You can order them from HC as they are in stock (they go real fast) and borrow one from me for the while as I told you last week.

Been using XT 60 for quite some time - i feel it is the best

Anything above 60 amps it would be better to go with 4mm bullet connectors though!

traxxas plugs are quite good too.

OK Fellows I have no doubt about XT-60, But following things goes with EC3

1 Can carry same current as XT-60 (55-60 amps)
2.Weights lesser than XT-60
3.easy availability than others
4.Smaller size.

Consider without any preoccupation.

Ya iamhuman I have heard about traxxas plugs they are also good

I think we should all do some research and find some alternative which is easily available here in India.

Thanks Ujjwaana for your offer, but I will not borrow from you but steal or probably better  snatch from you. ;)
(Please buddy no Calling 'sir' please..................) ;D

Hi Akshay,
you are correct that EC3 is more openly available but:
1. they are costlier than XT60
2. If you plan to get LiPO from Hobby King,  they come with XT60 (turnigy/Flightmax/Rhino), so  you can use the LiPo straightforward.
3. Other LiPo usually come with Deans.
4.iF you use XT60, you can easily borrow LiPo/ESC from other on the field .

ya you are right,
but are EC3s are really expensive than XT-60s, aren't deans are outdated now?
These queries still haunt my mind.

ya HK supplies their lipos with XT60s so it's easy to understand why they are so popular, here.

your no 4 is most practical and sensible idea.

so ------

"Anuugacchati Pravaha", a Sanskrit phrase which means "go with the flow"

But quest still goes on.

For cars, deans all the way....;)

In my opinion, XT60 are the best. They have a good grip while connecting and disconnecting. They have a small slot for the heat shrink to go in. A 14awg wire fits in perfectly. The connection between the female and the male plug is so tight and secure that there is virtually vacuum created between the two. deans on the contrary have a slippery finish. That is the reason, the fakes or the copies known as T plugs became populor because of the superior grip. The soldering on deans and the heat shrink do not give a very clean look. It is difficult to solder on the deans when there is nothing to support the wire in contrast to the little slot for the wire in the great XT60s.

XT60 are cheap.... so yes... XT60 is my choice...

EC-3s are better but XT-60s are much more convenient. Soldering on deans is a pain in the ss :-[

Yes...actually... I totally agree... you try to solder it and then the wire slips... even an item holder cannot get it perect...

deans on the contrary have a slippery finish.

Not sure what that means, doesn't sound right.  The original deans has great contact, mainly because of the spring type action of the bent piece on each leg of the male part.  Because of the same reason (the "spring type action"), the bullet connectors and its cousins would also fare better in terms of retaining contact pressure over repeated usage.

Regarding soldering of deans, all it takes is a bit of planning :

XT60s do have the other advantages mentioned.

Most of the people who fly electrics prefer to use  XT60's due to their quality, efficiency, price and being more popular now days.  deans were popular about 3 years back . but now the most common batteries that people use are from HK.  so either they have XT60 which is most common. lower capacity ones have JST. Higher ones  have Bullet .So These three types of connectors have made their monopoly sort of thing in this field. and hence are in demand the most

+1... XT60 again... They have really picked it up in a short time....

Also the heat shrinks also  grip and get locked perfectly in XT60 and gives a perfect finishing whereas in deans it starts to pull down after 5 or 6  pulls and also gives an unfinished look. which I personally hate.

PS: No offence meant to all those oldies who still prefer to use deans . I have personally seen a gentleman removing XT60's from all his new turnigy batteries  and putting deans. This sometimes also the reason we cannot share batteries as he has around 15+ batteries  :giggle: :giggle:

It doesn't make sense to change XT60s to deans.  I have made 5 conversion cables (one side XT60 male, other side deans female) for myself and others at the field, allowing XT60 batteries to be used with ESCs that already have deans males on them. Their lengths were kept as short as possible though.

If deans are soldered well, nothing should come off, and it looks pretty good too. But they would not have the clean "symmetric" looks of either XT60 or the banana plug derivatives.

The deans do not have much problems with soldering through. But the heat shrink tend to come off a little. And moreover, the chances of shorting is also a bit more in Deans. Yes, deans still have a good hold over the RC world and it will take time for replace deans completely. It is just the cheap turnigy and zippy batteries that are making the XT60s popular. Otherwise deans would still rule the market.

is there something like a half size xt-60 ?

just curious ......

I think it makes sense to keep various adopters ready with you, what ever system you use.

My heart still goes with EC-3, because it have all the qualities required by RCer.

Deans........ Past (old habbits die hard you know)

XT-60........ Present

EC-3..........Future

Well, don't know about the future, but for now, I am firmly hooked on xt60 for a max of 40-45amp setups
