Title: Which rotary tool to get?
Post by: lastRites on May 03, 2013, 07:20:52 AM
I need to cut fiberglass or its equivalent (upto 6mm) and common plywood (upto 10mm). The ability to grind a bit of tempered steel would be great too. What rotary tool should I get? I have saved up around Rs. 3500 and am willing to spend it all if I can get a decent tool. I need to cut precise angles too. So I would like to avoid heavy machines. Please suggest the the tool to get and the bits and accessories that would enable me cut precisely. I am up for any diy arrangement too.
Regards,
Trishit

I know what angle grinders are :P But I cannot really be precise with an angle grinder now, can I? ;D I need to make things like tricopter base plates and quadcopter frames outta alluminium or fibre sheets..

Chinese dremels? Can anybody post a picture of their Chinese rotary tool? They are called die grinders right? How reliable are they?

See chaps: I have a Dremel and I have a 3" Bench Grinder with an attached flex shaft rotary tool (like a die grinder) This has a 3 jaw chuck on it and goes to 10,000 RPM, and besides Dremel Accessories, a whole range of tools are available from e-bay, Ali Express, HK et al.

It costs Rs. 3500, and is really really useful! As a matter of fact, I hardly use the Dremel because this is so much more convenient. Available on e-bay + local m/c stor

I did a net search (I was posted in Mumbai then) and found a guy selling in Mumbai, phoned him, and he got the m/c to a convenient point. BTW, one wheel is grinding and one is polishing

Before buying check if it has a chuck or collet. Chuck is better

Can we get a cutting wheel for it?

@arun sir.. Felixble shaft is sort of a cord... of which one end is connected to the motor and the other one has a chuck / collect to put various tools like drill bits or grinder / cutting wheels.

P.S - The flexibility of the chord / shaft actually help in doing precision work.

I have attached a picture of the one I use

Theleabres: You can use any "mounted point" just like with a Dremel. For cutting wheel I use the Dremel Snap-on type

Edit
Changed image oreintation

This is 160 W and 10,000 RPM (variable) and can drill in steel up to 4 mm

If I can talk my parents into letting me use this in my room I may get one. Are there any more dremel 300 alternative?

:) the bench grinder combo with flexishaft shown above would be good for working on quads etc, but the main bench grinder has little use in quads. fiber glass sheets of 3mm max is more than enough for any multi, it gets too heavy other wise. u can use 5mm pp sheets also.  i usually work on harder materials so i had a angle grinder which i used along with dremel to cut my quads plates(2mm glass fiber). the angle grinder is too much for that but worked good(too fast).
one more alternative could be dremel with 90degree angle adapter or flexishaft to get a perpendicular approach angle then u can cut any plate. plus flexibilty of dremel and accessories in one package.
and dont cut glass fiber in your room. :P

Sanjay sir, this time I'm coming over to your workshop ;).

.
And those safety goggles, absolute must, whatever you're cutting. The smaller cutting wheels are like kids; so happy snapping off and flying off in random directions

lastRites (sorry don't know your real name). I will be going to Chawri this Saturday most probably, I can enquire if there is something similar available. Can forward you some contacts after I look around, so you can have a deal with them and if required, can take care of having it shipped if the shopkeeper isn't amenable. Lemme know if that suits.

search local hardware areas... you will get this type of die grinders with lots of extras for 1.5 to 2.5 k(thats the cost of those if i remember in blore), most online hardware stores are more expensive and stupid.  i dont know kolkata but in banglore u get similar types.  :)

edit- id still recommend original dremel 300 with 55 extra items and flexishaft , if not atleast use the original dremel accessories. theres a reason why the chinese ones have double the amount of extras, they break double the times. experience :)
