Title: Clear Transparent Covering needed
Post by: gauravag on March 18, 2011, 11:55:13 AM
Wondering if any RC store in India has clear transparent covering.
Need a roll of it.
Let me know if anyone knows where to get one.
Thanks

you can use laminating roll! of 20 micron to 80 micron depending upon your strength requirement!

Wrong! Gaurav is a hard-core Balsa guy ... he smells Methanol and Castor oil . He is not a Foamie builder like us!

He just bought foam from me so I was wondering.

Gaurav,
If weight is not much of consideration, and you are willing to do some work here are the options
1. Laminating film
2 Car film
3. The silver polyester gift wrapping stuff (will have to be stuck as this has no adhesive) and you could use some kero or NC thinner to rubb off the silver paint on one side of the film to give you clear transparent covering. Used to use this stuff in NCC and if you were not particular on which side was glued slowly the side of wing receiving fuel residue/exhaust would go transparent.
4. Also check with RC for all (Sai) he had some coloured transparent ones.May have clear as well.

Thanks Capt, Ujjwana,  and foamybuilder.

I was looking for the transparent covering to seal of the hinge-gaps on my 50CC gas airplane. I have used Monokote to seal of hinge gaps on nearly all airplanes I own but since I did not have the right color of covering, i was looking towards the clear cover to do the trick.

Will look at the Laminating film tomorrow. Hopefully it will do the trick.
Clear packing tap does not work , since the glue sticks on inside the hinge gap and hampers the proper movement of control surfaces.

And yes as Ujjwana has said, I am an all-balsa modeler - particularly Glow. However recently moved into gassers.
Akky, I have moved into foamies lately just to give me more of stick time, as I seem to have found out that my garden has enough space to fly/hover - Thus I can practice torque-rolls morning and evening :):):)

Foamybuilder, Somehow I cannot do with just flying and there has to be some building - Planning to do my first plan-built foamie soon . Experiencing this side of the hobby too :)

Thanks again everyone. I will post my observations when i try out the Clear laminating roll tomorrow.

-Gaurav

Gaurav,
Clear cello/packing tape should work just as fine. You will have to clean the area well with thinner/alco to remove any grease/dirt, and then remove the servo connection, deflect the surface to the opposit side to the max extent you can without breaking anything and then apply the tape to cover equal width on both the moveable and fixed surface. Repeat this on other side as well and you are done. Have done this on few of my models with wide enough cello tape and it has worked to an extent that a almost 11 year old model survived just because it had the sealing tape on the elevator. All the hinges had broken off with age and movement and the elevator was retained together with the tailplane with the tape alone.

Capt,
I had tried this actually, but the problem was that on my 50CC airplane there is a 45degree deflection in both directions. So, now when I stick the cellotape with the surface fully deflected in one direction  and neutralize the control surface, the excess tape fills the hinge-gap and sticks on the beveled surface. Now when I deflect it again, it offers some resistance as the tape needs to peel off from the hinge gap to allow for the full movement.

So i gathered that for this purpose, packing tape would not be appropriate rather monokote or equivalent would be better as they wouold not stick on to the beveled surfaces, making the movement easier.
