if it is to initiate your son into building, have you thought of buying indian kits from India Hobby centre orSarkar Models at kolkata. youu can get a range of C/L and  free flight kits which can be easily modified to 2 channel RC.

I've bought a lot of India HC  kits over the years --

you'd need to be a carpenter and not a modeller to assemble
them.

I built an apple box glider kit( 3channels) from Sharma models Jodhpur about 2 years back.It was a good kit easy to build and fly. The quality of balsa was good , quit a bit of cutting and sanding was required but still a good kit in my opinion. Now they are selling many more type of kits.See their web site for details.

@jitender, only if you compare Sharma's Apple Box Balsa quality with those from Sarkar Models, you can feel good.

If you got a decent DXF plan for the model of your choice and ready to spend 2-3 evening on AutoCad, AND, lucky to get stock of Balsa/Ply from RCDhmaka, you get a 'Short' Kit  laser cut in India at a fraction of total cost getting from USA/UK.

I am currently working on the plan of below models and would make the Cut out plan public if I am satisfied there are no more copyright holding on these plans:

1. AMP 015 (48" , 15 size glow Amp Master Jr look alike) - Plan cut, build started, would put a build log in a day or two
2. Greenley (60" Low/High winger, though need permission from a senior member before I put it public) - Plan laser cut by the senior member. Hope he would soon put the build log.
3. Mini Katana EP - lots o f work pending.
4. Guppy 2M "HotWinger" - future plan.

Would love to team up with experienced old timers and enthusiastic engineering students (AutoCad and other work) from Bangalore to expand the Scratch/Kit build activity.

Hi Ujwaana,
Sharma models can be raw by today's precise laser cut models, but do not forget they are pioneers of making Model flying planes, in India way back in 1974 (Probably, when majority of forum members were not born or didn't knew the meaning of model planes), remember those days, when making engineering products in India is highly challenging job.

As I mentioned in my previous post I myself have flown a CL model with a Sharma Engine in my Childhood, it's starting was perfect and flew like a charm, though I was not allowed to start it that time.

I still want to buy some Sharma models.

I hear, their engines are still sought after by many Model engine collectors world over.

I think, they have to upgrade their products to keep up with latest trend.

Please provide me with address of your Rc model making factory. Wink Grin Tongue

Hi Akshay,
I still habe regards for these old  school LHS , what they provided in the era of close economy. But then few of them doling Japanica in name of Balsa is not fare. I have seen the Orange Box glider with 'R C' (he is willing to sell it even, plz check), and I found the balsa was very raw. They were indeed a respected player in diesel engine for CL models, may be not as much in Glow/Gasser. But given the gaining volume in RC and their expertise, I would myself be happy if they keep up with time and provide quality Kits as sold by their UK/US brethren.

You are welcome to my place, which is way short of what I can call a Workshop. I would love to reconstruct Yash's Yummu Cub.

They are foundation stones of what we call Rc hobby today, was called Aero modelling those days, as radios are very-2 hard to see. In fact hobby was restricted to NCC, so their market is restricted to that and not able to grow with world. Same thing happened with Indian car manufacturers, could not grow in license raj.

Any how if they want to survive they have to grow up to present market that also fast.

Thanks buddy, missing flying sessions a lot, We shall try to meet this WE.

All the Best

L'enfant Terrible du RCIndia

There is a bit of a problem between Sarkar models and India Hobby Centre. It seems that Mr. Sarkar was once their employee and now has started manufacturing Aurora kits without license/permission from IHC. My association with IHC goes back over 30 years and, perhaps, I have also met this Mr. Sarkar.

I have bought some of his chuck gliders from IHC Mumbai and though they are definitely duplicates of what IHC used to sell decades ago, they are far from the original. The Spitfire chuck glider is a shame compared to what I used to buy from IHC Kolkata for Rs.4.50 (YES! Rupees Four and Paise Fifty ONLY) three decades ago.

I would not like to advertise here, but IMHO, the chuck / catapult gliders that I sell are far far superior to what Sarkar Models doles out.

Playing the Devil's Advocate, full marks to Sarkar Models on the survival factor. At least they have something to offer. IHC Kolkata has zilch! You ask them for a chuck glider and have to wait a fortnight for it.

Very different picture from what it used to be. I feel like a dinosaur today when someone discusses the erstwhile Mecca of Aeromodelling in India - the great India Hobby Centre Calcutta.

I do not think the LHS calls the pine and Japanica in thier kits as Balsa. Neither would one accept if were told it was balsa. And if you have seen thier Solarbo balsa kits, you would know what they used to sell.
The problem what I foresee is that people in India want things cheap, so the seller has to match expectations. Try getting a few kits cut with Solarbo balsa and Finnish birch ply and see if the same kit could be sold at the prie this LHS sells
