How to make your toy RC car drive faster and better

If you have a toy-grade RC car and are disappointed in how fast it goes and the way it drives, then the following project will be of interest to you.  I wanted to upgrade a Rastar 1:14 scale RC car to address these issues.  Although I love the way these cars look, the non-proportional controls make the cars hard to drive in small spaces and they are relatively slow.  I have therefore purchased some new components and disassembled the car to show you how it can be upgraded.  This project is done to be as cheap and simple as possible, with the minimum amount of modifications.

The base vehicle I decided to use for this proof of concept upgrade was the new BMW XM Label Red.  Here is the car before the project started:
