Dear all -

Officially, RC India just passed 5 years of existence, and we have surpassed the milestone of 10,000 members. I had never really thought of this day when I decided to start a forum out of frustration with something. So I have to say a few things.

1.  Thank you. No, THANK... YYYYOOOUUUU.

2.  I am realizing that I have grown to be more hard-headed and less compassionate, and it has begun to show quite frequently nowadays. A simple example is that I put the topic name as "Warning" in PMs to people who were violating forum policies, but I should have put the topic as "Your co-operation is requested" (at least the first time around). I think age/stress is playing a part here.

3.  I am going to announce another "build and win" sweepstakes to celebrate the occasion.

4.  I am seeing many questions from newcomers going unanswered, please pitch in if you are able to help. Even if it is asking them to read a particular thread or just search and read, some response is better than no response.

5.  If I have hurt anyone with my words or deeds, please know that being stubborn is part of my nature (that is what got this forum started), and a big part is that I tend to care a bit too much about small details. And an even larger part these days is age/stress.  I ask for your forgiveness.

Once again, thank you all.

I am guilty as charged on this account, though not an excuse, past one year has been very hectic managing two PhDs and so much of travelling. I will try and do my bit. The reason I open the forum almost every single day is do exactly that (answer queries if any).

Normally, I am quite eloquent on this forum and elsewhere, however, at this moment words actually fail me. When I look back on the journey that I started here in Nov. 2009 and where I have reached today, it is almost incredible. RCIndia has been a life changing platform for me in every respect.

Anwar Sahab, the words 'Thank you' seem so inadequate now. Just be who you are and continue to inspire us.

Happy Birthday RCI and if the others weren't aware :

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANWAR SAHAB. GOD BLESS.

Did you know i remember every post that i ever laid my eyes on? and that is practically every post. Sandy used to tell me this often "Sir aap ko itne posts kaise yaad rahaten hai"

Well here is yours written nearly two years ago..nearly (or is it exactly ?) same words

For the last 20 mins, I've been sitting here staring at the screen thinking of a suitable line to write to express my gratitude to Anwar Sahab. Normally, I'm quite eloquent and fluid with my language, today however, words fail me.

'Thank you' seems to be so inadequate today.

I just can't imagine my life without this forum. What I was on 2nd. Nov 2009 and what I am today is unbelievable, even for me. Experiences, learnings, friends, associates, models, equipment, successes and failures - this has been a life changing adventure that continues relentlessly.

God bless this forum and all the members.

Holy Toledo!!!! Its almost verbatim. :o

During my training workshops, I often tell candidates who are getting ready to face interviews that the interviewer looks for linkages in your statements. If you keep repeating a fact about yourself in different ways, over the course of the interview, then he believes in your sincerity. I think I stand proved on this count.

But for RCI how could we have met a guy like rcpilotacro, who besides his numerous talents, is now revealed to be blessed with an elephantine memory!

@Anwar Sir,
Here's an idea.
Can you convene an RC India convention, where we can actually meet the guys we exchange banter and barbs with? (Annually?)

I just might want to hijack this idea and shift the venue to Guwahati. Let me get the logistics correct first. After all, Assam has been host to the biggest ever Aeromodelling camp and the first ever Flying Carnival - why not make it 3 in a row? I know I can count on Gusty/ Sandy/ Saikat/ Pravesh/ our friends from Mizoram et al (with their collective North eastern experiences) and I think we can make this happen. Stay tuned.

End of April.  That should be enough time for everyone.

Also thinking of changing the rules so that scratch builders will get 5x chances, and both heli and car builders will get 3x if they start from a kit.

There will be two winners, both will receive same prizes.

sanjayrai55

What is the difference between a kit build (say from a balsa kit) or an ARF in the context of this competition?

Would a scratch build be defined as including design?

anwar

ARF would get only 1x chances. Kit builds would get 5x chances.  I am thinking of increasing the chances based on complexity/effort of the build.

Scratch and kit builds will both get around 5x chances, based on effort and originality (if the design is particularly challenging, why not 10x !).

And we will have the draw in mid-may.

Anwar Bhai, Happy Birth day.
The challenge of building up the forum for the Hobby in itself is born out of the vision and tenacity of ONE individual, you, egged-on by so many others who took turns in nurturing it by their regular contributions and visits/revisits to the forum. Their contributions to the growth is understandable. The reminiscences/sentiments expressed by you and tone/feelings of your acknowledgements are greatly appreciated.
At the same time, the magical figure of 10000 +, a tribute to your vision made me sit up and review the members' list.  :headscratch:What the list showed is a different story : I noted that a great, great majority of those who joined the Forum never bothered to participate in ANY discussion, nor bothered to re-visit any of the topics, let alone start a new one :o. I wonder why did they join this Forum in the first place. The Forum pulled on, albeit at different paces by the some / same members who made this the sanctum sanctorum, and a lively one at that  :salute:!! Some ids vanished, some left voluntarily, some died a natural death; some do not even remember that they had this RC fever once upon a time and joined it as a knee-jerk reaction, on the spur of the moment.
So, I just wonder - is there any way to poke these guys/gals in to activity from the Admin side? Of course with the help and co-operation of the active / senior (not by virtue of Date of Joining) members. Any suggestions from the respected members?
It would be wonderful if this could be achieved as a part of  a larger canvas of development of the hobby. This in turn, would widen the active base, gets more exposure, improves the opportunities of getting material and better services to the hobby in general.
Just my two cents, after seeing the numbers 0,1 or 2 postings against the names of the members list of 202 pages... Hope you guys don't laugh at my suggestion. :headscratch:

Anwar Bhai,

What the list showed is a different story : I noted that a great, great majority of those who joined the Forum never bothered to participate

OMG
you are absolutely right about it doc. i did some analysis, these are as follows

1. there are only 3200 members who have posted some thing out of 10000+

2. Posters with double digit amount to only 1225

3. posters more than 50 posts amount to only 440

4. Oldest (as per date of joining) zero poster is 'new born choosa'

What is intriguing is the list of zero posters (Believe me i went through all of'em). this list includes some veterans of the hobby who come here and be a mute spectator, probably they feel it is below them or from fear of some kind of 'ticking off' they done post. these names include

Fulli buxi from Nagpur

Some well known people from Flying Giants

Model Boat Mayhem

some more such names.

So much for statistics

PS
Then there are Admin, anwarpp who are no one but our admin himself, who are single posters :giggle:

dont go by the single posters most of'em are here and are reading them, gaining knowledge. JUST a sundry info, top three posters are anwar, VC & rcpilotacro

This topic has been beaten to death ! The whole question of prodding people back into action on the forum sounded like a bright idea to me multiple times earlier.

But soon I realized that knowledge in this hobby has sort of saturated. I say sort of, because if you watched the past one or two years of activity, it has tilted heavily towards multirotors, and there is lots of activity about them.  I guess part of the appeal is that they provide the best vehicle these days for someone to enter RC, at limited cost, fairly low risk of failures/crashes, no need for a large field etc.

And the trend is truly reflected as "activity" on the forum.  The traditional builds and worrying about airfoil shapes and sizes of tail stabilizer versus wing span etc etc are discussed a lot less. Not that people are not doing and enjoying that, but there is a trend towards instant gratification, or life may have just gotten too hectic overall !

So these days, I feel like sitting back and watching, instead of coxing people into going back to the true beauty of aeromodelling. I do request people to post something about what they are doing, even if an occasional picture from the field. Just keeps life interesting for all of us who spend part of their busy days here, hoping there will be something new every time we stop by !

Anwar bhai, I too have noticed the trend all over in many fora and it is more so here with us because, other things being equal, the 'made-easily n used-easily' is incentive enough for the switch over. In fact I myself am in to the phase of acquiring one - note, it is an 'addition' and not a substitution or switch-over. For those who wanted a change, Helis are not a logical change-over; :banghead: at least not for me. The complexity and cost apart, some how it was not my cup of tea. In other world fora, the switch over is to more complex and costly aspects of their present interest. May be, ease of availability and affordability (at least for them over there) is a factor. Have go with the inevitable :headscratch:.

For competition build & win I have some suggestions:
(i) I think the name of build thread should start with a specific name: like Build & Win or  B&W.....
(ii) Winner should be one, yes you can give same prize to the runner up.
(iii) A panel of judges should make a decision for winners, because lucky draw decrease the value of competition, one who have 1x chance could be the winner while other can lose with 10x chance.
You can judged on:
Build quality and details
Techniques used
Level of step by step detail shared in the build thread
Decoration
Flight Quality
Your analysis of flight performance & flight video
Uniqueness of model
Voting etc...

Swapnil

Anwar sir, how about the judges consider the results of a voting system in addition to their own selection criteria? Here's how the voting system would work:

1) Each participating member can cast two votes for two separate participants. So, even if each participant votes once for them-self, the other vote would be unbiased.

2) Each non-participating member with more than 1000 posts can cast two votes. Others are not allowed to vote.

3) The voting would be visible to everyone. In a thread, each voter would add one post with the names of the two people they have chosen. The results of the voting would be visible in the 1st post.

anwar

Both the above arguments assume that this is a forum consisting of only airplane builders. We need to be inclusive of every type of modeling, and we will influence the chances for people who put in the effort. But every type of modeler should have at least have a shot at winning.

Some one who builds a car from a kit, or someone who builds a quad should both have some percentage chance of winning.

If we go with the above suggestions, such groups will be gravely disadvantaged.

What I can try is to have one voting based winner, and one winner whose fate is decided by a higher power, or chance, as you perceive it.

After all Idi Amin loved all his subjects equally ;D

The voting system suggested by me covers all kinds of RC crafts. In fact, my youngest cousin is planning to submit a unique 'hovercraft' design.

Also, I meant it to be considered as a secondary system to the higher power (like 70 % judges ruling and 30% voting results).

Voting would let everyone see the people's favorite!

Atleast in our circle/field  people are still building and experimenting. We still have hours long discussion on airfoils and wingtips. The knowledge is no where near saturated. Now we don't want something which is just flight worthy; we are now more interested in performance and doing something which we have not done before. But what has changed is that people have stopped reporting their activities on the forum. Most discussions have moved to facebook pages or local whatsapp groups. I honestly feel that we need to get people to participate here just for the fact that this is the mother group and also for the visibility this hobby deserves. But I cant point figures as I am also in the 'absconding from the forum' lot.

Anyways, this event might just be the "bump" this community needs. I'm trying to get the word around and you would definitely see more participation from Baner, Pune crowd.
