I build mainly in foam




We have various floating events in the UK take place now the Spring weather is here - this video demonstrates the fun to be had whilst float flying.

Featured in the video are two friends of B4ggu and myself. they are flying there Arc Beavers to good effect, unfortunately both on them are not well at present, lets hope they get better and are able to get out this year and enjoy flying of the water again.

Over the Stan and Brian, the event was in May 2009 at a pond in Colwick Park, Nottinghamshire which is by the River Trent in the midlands.

Enjoy the video and music, also features modellers from Nottingham and Burbage model flying clubs.

Cheers VC I enjoyed that day.

Found another Video starring both Stan and Brian, on another discipline - Glider slope flying.

In this video they had fun as well, here they maiden a new plane I'd designed and made -Gazelle - on the day they also introduced Stan's son Darren to slope flying. At one point two Gazelles get tangled up and just part before hitting the slope.

This was filmed about 20 miles from where the float flying was at a hill called Burrough Hill near Leicester City UK.

Never seen a float plane in real life.
Never even seen a slope.
Youtube won't open the first video on my iPad.
But the second video is nice.
Good to see young flyers (ie, younger than me)
Afraid to get my feet wet,
Cos i'm already wet behind the ears!

Slope panto video is not nice, it's GREAT.
Surprised at less than 1000 hits in over 5 years.
Pm a guy called theleabres on this forum and send him this link.
He has video of a hawk attacking his model, that has over 2 million hits!

Nice videos Mark... I hope my "All Terrain Skim Lander" will be ready soon so I can fly with them this summer... I am sure they will both be fine soon. Brian taught me how to fly 15 years ago.... super teacher, spoke to him in Hospital, I hope he recovers soon.

Mark please check the settings in video manager ------> advance settings-----  there might be a box thst is been ticked which is why KK cannot view it on ipad... I can view it on Desktop, have not tried iphone...
Similar thing happened with one of my videos a year ago and damm...I lost the whole video while trying to tweek the settings, I miss that video as I had erased the camera card.... "SO BE CAREFULL" .
My screen is still coming black on You Tube Movie maker uploads so I cannot upload any videos...

I sure the video will load at another time KK and like you say using something else.

I watched your video of the landing. If it helps with your landings how about this idea.

Did you think the landing speed was fast and flat in glide path?

If so - here an idea you could bring into play to help with your landings.

If the plane hasn't any flaps its doesn't matter you could try this idea just using your
elevator trim -

-First practice some fly bys at 3X tree top height with a low power setting
with say 3 clicks up up trim in, what your trying to achieve is maintaining
the same height at a lower speed.

-Fly around again approach same height before landing area cut the power
and notice the glide angle and speed - is it better?  If yes
then land at this speed,  if not fly around again, remember use
only a little power your got 3 clicks of up in, take it of if you can't
handle it, and reapply again on or before the next approach.

- on this approach put more up clicks in say - 1 -2 or 3 you decide, put it in well before the
landing area and at 3X tree top height cut the power just before the landing area
checking the decent speed and angle? - is it a better glider angle and speed to land on?

What your trying to achieve is a setting from your plane that is slower
so you can choose where it will land, this can be achieved with the use
of a different trim from the elevator on a simple aircraft.

This technique is done by large passenger airliners, the tailplane as a whole will
be re-trimmed for take off and a different setting for landing. This is done with up incidence.
So with a combination of flaps and slats on the wings to create more lift and slow down by making
drag to go slower the pilot can make the runway and the attitude of the body
therefore wing is at a angle and by helped with re trimming the tailplane.

You can copy this for your landings by using your elevator trim for slowing down for landing
by altering the incidence of the body/ wing. Now if you need to stretch the landing
to go further before touch down then put on a little power your not upsetting the plane to much
with just a few clicks more power on the motor, if its to high then cut the motor to shorten the run over the landing area.    

- remember its radio control and you choose where your going to land

This method with help with a fast trimmed model. However do remember to take of the trim before take off again
otherwise the model with be a handful, and the same if you do a fly by with the trim still in,
consider taking the trim off it your finding it a handful.

Sorry if you have I ready tried something like this - if not enjoy the practice, this method helps. please report back I'll be interested

Thanks for taking the trouble to try and help.
In case you are interested, there are several issues:
Yuki Models Pilatus B4 64", electric power
Currently using so much up trim (see pic) that she does a tight loop from level on WOT.
Stall testing showed severe wing drop.
Loading is high (>14oz/sqft) for its size (64")
Fully aerobatic, not a floater.
Requires bank to be held off, else nose drops badly in turns.
Coordinated rudder not showing any significant effect
First we thought it was tip stalling due to being tail heavy.
But on checking the elevator trim, i feel she's nose heavy - hence need for up trim.
Also probably a mistake to slow her. Perhaps needs to fly fast.

Remember seeing a review on youtube, which said indicated CG is too far ahead.
Don't have a smaller lighter battery with the reqd power, so may have to stick pennies to the tail, which i'm loath to do.
Hey, perhaps the keycam on the T-tail?
Will try on Sunday afternoon and update.

(The other problem is that my experience, circa 1980, on Schwiezer 1-26, prevents me from slowing a glider on landing -even a model! Prefer 5 knots extra in one hand and spoiler handle in the other)

3" is a long way on 6" chord!

The issue really is
Am i stalling as tail heavy?
Am i dropping nose on turns as nose heavy?

Presently balanced where shown on plans.

the horn on the elevator.....

needs to have the hole where the wire goes in (clevis) below the hinge line

reason - the movement for from the wire becomes ineffective....unless the hole is in-line and below elevator hinge line

problem is I got to go out now - to a art exhibition in Stamford Lincolnshire

The horn (and the hole) is where it is because the pushrod is perpendicular to the surface, not parallel.

Hi Mark,
You made me take a second look.
You are right about the pushrod not being at right angles to the radius arm of the horn, leading to asymmetry, like aileron differential.
But,
All it does is produce more up than down for the same servo travel. No effect on our problem.

A closer look at the stabilizer photo showed up an entirely different problem!
Spar delaminated from stab! See pic.

Causes flutter? Going to epoxy it and check the other side too. Also going to add washers under the stab hold down bolts.

Your landing trim comments made me realise that was exactly what i was doing, except for the fact that i was flying the ENTIRE FLIGHT with that trim!

Well, well. Never too old/late to learn.

Good I'm sure you'll get it flying better, and if your looked over the plane again that's good.

Shall I still do the drawings it will help new starters with the hobby, to help understand more about importance of control movements and set-up?

It could help others learn and you could be a great example in how you solved your problem with your plane/model and got it flying better.
Lets face it KK, alot a RC flying is solving problems to get it to work better, fly better and start having fun.

Must have done my share of it (ie, problem solving), considering i started in 1966! But that's another story

Anyway, took out the pushrod, hammered the kinks straight, zeroed the sub-trims, reset the servo arms.
While checking if the servo arms snag, guess what i found.
A washer and a C clip stuck under the magnet for the hatch hold-down!
Must have been there from day one. Clip flew off as usual so spent an hour sweeping the floor with a magnet. Till wife found it (as she always does) within 5 secounds, ten feet away.
(BTW she's the RC Aunt who gets mentioned on this forum once in a way. Been into aeromodelling since we got engaged - 1980!)

Latest issue (March) of RC Soaring Digest has a five page article called Linkage 101. Here's what it says about differential throw:
"The pushrod must be connected to the control horn and servo arm at a 90 degree angle from a line between the hinge line and the pushrod attachment point to avoid unequal movement either side of neutral. In the “good old days,” we adjusted the angle between the pushrod and aileron horns or control horns to provide aileron differential but that isn’t necessary with modern computer radios."

A young member recently posted a pic of his horn setup, asking if it was OK. Was really grateful for my brief reply - TURN IT AROUND.

You could put up a few pics/drawings of horn/linkage setup. But start a new thread. Would get drowned in this one.

And don't even look at my workbench  Grin
