hi!
so i was planning to make a sailboat for a while, but didn't get the material, now that i got my hands on foamboard, i am going ahead with the build
BRIEF history:- The 56 ft sloop was constructed at the boat yard of M/s Aquarius Fiberglas Pvt Ltd at Divar, Goa, by Ratnakar Dandekar and was handed over to the Indian Navy in Feb 2009. In a fitting tribute to the place where the boat was constructed, the Indian Navy named the yacht INSV Mhadei, after the river Mhadei, the origin of river Mandovi.
the mhadei has sailed around the world TWICE. once by Cdr Dilip Donde (sagarparikrama 1), and once by Lt Cdr Abhilash Tomy(sagarparkirama 2)
i myself have sailed on her, and she is amazing...
like the official Facebook page here:
https://www.facebook.com/www.mhadei.co.in
and here's her blog:

http://sagarparikrama2.blogspot.in/
Stats of actual boat:
Length 17.1 meter
Length of Waterline 14.40 meter
Beam 5 meter
Displacement 23 tons
Draft 2.7 mtrs
Material Wood Core Fibreglass
Height of Mast 21 mtrs from the waterline
Build: i am going to build this out of 3mm foamboard, with a 20" long hull. i got my hands on the plans with the condition that they do not get shared, so i can't mail it to anyone. sorry :/
these are the plans available freely from the website of the designer

i am using the same ones, but in vectors
it will be primarily sail powered, but like the real boat, it will have a small motor to power it.
in this case a small 1300Kv outrunner http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__5427__AX_2306N_1300kv_Brushless_Bell_Motor.html (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__5427__AX_2306N_1300kv_Brushless_Bell_Motor.html)
with a 20A esc and a small 2 blade prop
also will have it with the standard jib sail, instead of a genaker

Nice build {:)} {:)}
Please share your progress with us :)
A most interesting and challenging project!
You have mentioned 3 mm foam (is that Sunboard?) and a 1300 KV Bell motor. But what scale are you going to make it?
I suggest from the rigidity & strength viewpoints to have a wood frame too. Use the Sunboard for the skin.
All the best :D :D
All the best for this project. I think you meant Gennaker (Genoa + Spinnaker).
@sanjay sir, i mean sunboard, or foamboard, or whatever that stuff is that they use for cheapo number plates :P
@VC sir oops :P Typo... ;D
Wow.... Almost 2 whole years since I posted this :giggle: finally I found time to get started on this build!
Made a few modifications.. Now building with balsa..!
Here are the formers cut out and ready to assemble!
Here assembled.. Beginning with the planking now... And I think I'm gonna run out of balsa pretty soon :/
Also scratching my head about whether I should use a 10mm cf rod for the mast or something else...
Nice, The balsa is so white, most of the balsa planes i have seen aren't this white.
.. Aaand I'm out of balsa :banghead: :(
Managed too plank quite a bit though...
Nice build aniket.
Looking forward to trying it out too :P
Can't wait to see how the successor to the Mhadei turns out to be.
P.S- I too have been on the boat twice, its a piece of art! Really sturdy and much bigger in person.
BTW if anyone is interested in the history of the craft check out the blog by Abhilash Tomy who went on the solo circumnavigation mission 'Sagarparikrama 2' on the Mhadei
