Title: Antenna for 2.4Ghz 11dBi Omnidirectional - Extend the range
Post by: mbt1370 on September 12, 2013, 09:40:49 AM
Sensitivity/Gain: 11dBi
You must need SMA connector to connect this antenna to your transmitter. You can buy it from local Electronic shop.
Asking price is - 1000 + shipping.
we have 2 Same antenna..
1000 Is for each Antenna.

11 dbi ..pheww... for video tx or rc tx?? either way.. it isnt possible instead range will come down using stock tx power.. i need to add a watt booster ~ 1 watt to use full 11 dbi of power emmission.. with 11 dbi and 1 watt power i got about 16 km range on video tx 2.4 ghz.

I will add Images...ASAP..
That you can use for RC TX ...I think you can not use for VIDEO TX bcoz its length is Longer.

@Sujith If you get 16 Km for a video tx bandwidth. Same setup for RC control bandwidth you will get more than thrice the range.
But with an Omni directional is really doubtful. If it was a Patch antenna then it is a different story.
Wifi patches are not compatible for Video Tx because of male / female SMA (SMA and RP SMA) connectors. need to change the SMA connectors.
Please do post a photo with close up of the SMA connectors.

OK for video TX only. Thanks.

means...??? :-\ You can use this also for RC TX but you need to SMA connector...to connect with your RC TX.
if anyone Need to buy then PM me..or email -

Yes you need an SMA convertor adapter for use with RC TX. All wifi antenna are compatible with RC TX.

That's Correct....This is 2.4 Ghz...so we can use any RC 2.4 GHZ Tx With SMA Connector...
Where to buy SMA Connector - You Can Easily buy it from your local Electronic shop...

I am just pointing out the obvious to the sundry.
Not just any connector. You need a SMA convertor to use with RC Tx. which is not available in just any electronic shop but available here though
But like what Sujith has pointed out use it with wifi amplifier for best performance and for long range flying only and not for short range LOS regular flying. You will loose link when model in the direction of tip of antenna (Like when flying right overhead when antenna is vertical)

hi,
would like to contribute a little....
i am new to this field of RC Flying but Radio and Wireless is my bread and butter so now with the discussion happening above I would like to give some inputs on the antenna part...
the antenna is a passive device in radio communication and it is just a radiator which will be radiating the electromagnetic wave to and fro from the radio.
everyone is talking about a high gain antenna but you should understand the power of the radio output also at the same time....
the antenna is like a pipe and the higher the gain the smaller the nozzle for farther reach... but all this depends on the the radio which acts like the water pump....behind the pipe... if the pump itself does not have enough power to throw the water the entire pipe and nozzel is of not much use....
so i don't know how much is the power (in dBm) of the radios in the RC Flying equipment... if someone can help me get it we will be able to calculate the transmission distance between the Controller and Flying Object by calculating the FSL (Free Space Loss) with 2.4 GHz spectrum.

I would request you to throw more light on the difference in pattern of radiation in a low gain omnidirectional which is more spherical and a much flatter and elliptical pattern with farther reach for a high gain omni directional antenna. This is more pertinent for a RC flying scenario and a long range flying case.

hi sundaram,
thank you for the reply.
the radiation patterns can be drawn based on the antenna gain and the polarization....
i assume we will be using single polarization in the RC flying hence any one either vertical or horizontal will work...
attaching some sample images to this post and explanation give below for each image.
8dbidirection.gif --> 8 dBi panel (directional) antenna radiation patterns in vertical and horizontal (http://s7.postimg.org/fyd3c8o97/8dbidirection.gif) *************************************************************************
14dbipanel.jpg --> 14 dBi panel (directional) antenna radiation patterns in vertical and horizontal (http://s13.postimg.org/faqh3qumv/14dbipanel.jpg) *************************************************************************
23dbidirection.gif --> 23 dBi panel (directional) antenna radiation patterns in vertical and horizontal (http://s21.postimg.org/hg0a6g1iv/23dbidirection.gif) *************************************************************************
omnipattern.jpg --> 5 dBi Rubber Duck (Omni directional) antenna radiation patterns in vertical and horizontal (http://s11.postimg.org/vvpi9nx0z/omnipattern.gif) *************************************************************************
in case a panel antenna is replaced by a grid type antenna with the same gain the beam becomes even more tight traveling farther but at the same time the aperture also reduces hence it require more precision pointing the beam to the recv. side.
