Title: How do I increase range of my transmitter?
Post by: gouthamsharma on January 06, 2015, 10:56:32 PM
Hello!

I have bought Flysky 6 channel RC transmitter and receiver a month ago. The range is found to be about 200m LOS. Now I want to increase the range to atleast 500m. How do i do it? Can I use the trainer port given behind for this purpose? Can I hack my transmitter and connect it to another powerful antenna?

Thanks
Goutham

2oo mts ? it's too low, you should get more range with stock module and antenna.

I have a fs t6. ... I also feel that it's range is low....how to increase range. . Which module I have to use.

@sooraj.pallakad, What is a stock module and how do I interface it with FS 6x?

Get a dragon link :D

@kplkum, you have to use DIY modules, as the stock module in a flysky T6 is not plug and play.
A little electronic know how and soldering skill is required, still it's easy.

@gouthamsharma, By stock module I meant the 2.4GHz transmitter module inside FS-T6 . 200mts is definitely not the max. range for a flysky T6 radio, you should get at least 1Km LOS, Check your Transmitter and Receiver antenna for problems...

Feel that the range is low??
How?
In 35 years, never had that problem with Sanwa, Futaba and Hitec. Not even with a Guanli and Riccs (seem to be clones of Futaba Skysport).
Till last Sunday. Wrote off my wife's model.
Reason?
Was using a 2004 Futaba 1024 PCM ON 29mhz and FORGOT TO EXTEND THE Tx Antenna.
Due to having got accustomed to 2.4ghz in the last two years.

Have no experience of Flysky, but expect that range should not be a problem if you get 30-40 meters in range check mode.

Checked the size of our field on Google Earth. 450ft each side of the pits, 500ft in front. Telemetry showed we normally fly at less than 300 ft altitude. So i don't think our models ever get as far away as 500 meters

Don't know if you have Failsafe. If you do, has it ever come on? If not, you've never been out of range.

FrSky 2.4 Tx module with telemetry Rx (even without any sensors) makes your Tx beep if the signal received by the Rx gets low. (RSSI - Received Signal Strength Indicator)

@Iyer sir,
Flysky 6Ch (CT6B / FS-T6) has no telemetry, Fail safe nor range check mode.
Still it is a good radio (From a newb's experience, so you don't have to consider these words :giggle:)

But I am pretty sure, my transmitter provides more than 600mtrs reliable range (LOS, with no obstructions), have flown from my terrace to another building which is 600mtrs away.

@Kplkum and Gouthamsharma , keep transmitter and receiver antennas parallel to each other .In goutham's case I suspect a faulty antenna as he says range is only 200mtrs.

@k k layer I lost control on my plane when it was about 300 meter.

there must be a problem with the antenna or the orientation!! and still if you think you want to increase the range there are very few options!!

I wouldn't mind increasing my FS-CT6B's range too ?

What muddling has to be done for that ? All stock here ...

You can get a range of at least 4kms and upto 10kms!! Using a two watt booster!!but first. It exceeds the max. Power of 1w so illegal and you might disturb other 2.4ghz radio by boosting!!

JK

an simpler way ? Like using mushroom antennae instead of the stock will give a boost of 2Km or something ??

Don't recall people who have been flying RC for long complaining about range.
Are the newer pilots flying much farther away?
Or is it a FlySky problem?

Or altogether a different issue. Like loss of orientation?

I've had crashes due to:
Orientation loss in low light
Aerobatics too low, forgetting that it's on high rates
Servo failure
Failure of Deans to XT60 link due to cold solder joint
Forgetting to extend Tx antenna on an FM radio
Fairly frequent glitches (say once in 4 sundays) in a particular direction (with 2.4ghz radios)

Also had beeps from telemetry when flying a 40 glow with 8 year old NiMH in the plane. Maybe low voltage under load. But landed safely as a precaution. Meanwhile raising the Tx above my head stopped the beeps.

But the last time i had a flyaway due to loss of contact was about 40 years ago on a 27mhz (Delhi Polo Ground)

For example, kplkum said:
'I lost control on my plane when it was about 300 meter.'

I wonder:
Was it really over 1000 ft away?
Was lack of range the problem?
Or something else?

I'm told that the FlySky doesn't have Failsafe.
Maybe we should have a radio that has Failsafe.
Try it. You'll be surprised that you can switch off the Tx and still not crash!

Can we check the typical distance we fly on Google Earth?

One more thing, Is it wise to invest in a radio with failsafe, now ? Or should I wait and when the distances increase, then buy one ?

@parichya, if your consideration is Fail safe and Telemetry, than Radio range extension, you can get DIY modules of DSM standard (Orange DIY) or any other that has these functions, and with little soldering and tweaking (that's why these modules are named DIY) , you can attach this modules to any radio - to avail the features and safety of High end radios...

Not much telemetry but Main is Failsafe then the range.
How do i do it ?

FS-CT6b here ..

search for DIY RF modules with failsafe function and also Long range ...

Pretty long range modules (EzUHF) costs a heck !

FYI, failsafe on tx/rx only sets the channels output to a predefined level as per user. So in case of a failsafe in a plane you would like to set it in such a way than all controls are trimmed and plane makes a smooth decent with just enough throttle to glide, leading to a very low impact crash.

In case of multirotors, you would like to set it to mid points of your controls, with throttle being set to a notch below hover so that the copter lands when you loose signal.

However in both cases you cant predict where it would land when some flyers are hellbent on flying it in residential areas! So more than fail-safe you need a system which returns to you when you loose link specifically in case of copters.

So instead of increasing range you should get an autopilot which rtl's when you loose link. At 100 meters my 500mm quad looks like a dot in the sky with absolutely no sense of orientation, im not sure how you guys are flying it at 300meters without FPV! I think the same goes for 1500mm trainer?
