Well !!
this has been there for a while, in the military, it was called TERCOM (Terrain Contour Matching) (http://terrain%20contour%20matching) during Iraq war (1991) it was used in a missile called Tomahawk. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomahawk_%28missile%29)
Modern version of TERCOM is called Digital Scene-Mapping Area Correlator (DSMAC) (Later version of Tomahwak has it), as of now Desmac (as it is pronounced) is cutting edge technology which is not with many countries. India in Desmac, is reportedly leading, thanks to R&D of BRAHMOS missile (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BrahMos)
