Title: Trouble upgrading firmware on 808 camera
Post by: SunLikeStar on March 19, 2011, 12:31:12 AM
Got the hobbyking keychain camera today, its a 808 #7 cam.
Installed a 4 gb class 4 micro SD on it and everything was working fine. Then i decided to upgade its firmware :banghead:
I followed these instructions from chucklohr.
http://www.chucklohr.com/808/C7/index.html#C7UpdateInstructions
I first tried V2.04, started the burn tool, the progress bar went fine till 95% then turned red with a message "fail to download boot"
Then i tried V1.07, this time the status bar got stuck at around 20% saying "beginning to erase".
The camera is not working now. Has any one done this before? am i doing something wrong ???

ya, I had one. I tried firmware update too, which worked fine for me. I changed some of the configs too on the txt file (like removing timer etc). And its no way related to SD card. It works with or without the SD card. So, which OS you are using? I think it works on XP.

BTW how to recognize the SD card as a High Speed card? 'coz I need one. High speed cards only gives good non-jerky vids on these cams.

i am on win XP.
class is printed on the card itself, for example a class 4 card will have a "C" with a "4" printed inside it.

Which key you are supposed to hold to put it in burn mode?

Got it working by upgrading to V3.01. The default config had the date time stamp turned off, which is what i wanted. Just changed the frame rate to 22.
All izz well  :)

Sample video.
The camera records over exposed videos with washed out colors.
This was recorded at 6pm in the evening, in bright daylight its even worse. This cam needs sunglasses 8)
Also the field of view is very narrow.

Not sure the one you get with the camera will be genuine microsd, try a class4 Kingston you can find the diff. As I have both and framerate changes when I change the sdcards.

I am using 4GB sandisc class 4 bought locally from croma and changed the frame rate to 22.
Title: Mod for wide angle
Post by: SunLikeStar on March 28, 2011, 05:43:24 PM
First open the camera, and unscrew the lens as far out as possible making it myopic. Now take any door peephole barrel; remove its eyepiece and keep the objective in the barrel. Now test fit the barrel infront of the camera, if the focus is not good then reduce the barrels length from eyepiece end and try again. Glue the barrel in place when you are satisfied with the focus.

Here is the same shot as above with the mod.

I am very happy with my camera. The only problem is the extremely bright reflections from light colored surfaces. I have got a small Jelly Lens Polarized Filter from DX (http://www.dealextreme.com/p/jelly-lens-polarized-filter-for-cell-phones-and-compact-digital-cameras-22868). I don't know any thing about photography but i've been using similar filters on telescopes to reduce glare.
The thing is i'll have to break open my modded camera barrel to fix this filter as it is not big enough to cover the wide angle lens. Is it worth doing this, will this help fix the glare problem  ???

This is the video quality i am getting right now, you can see how details on white surfaces are washed out.

Polarized filter did no good, and i waisted lot of time refocusing the camera. Not touching it again >:(
